Confidence and Right View Are the Most Dependable Things in Life
When worldly people practice Buddhism,
if there is excessive comfort in all areas of their life,
則不易生起出離心;
renunciation will not be easy.
But if conditions are too harsh and they lack sufficient food or clothing,
the body will experience unease.
When the body is not at ease, the practice will not be fruitful.
Thus, the Mahayana sutras and shastras say to avoid falling into the two extremes.
One should practice the middle way.
Every individual must earnestly ponder the path ahead.
For the present and the future to be perfect and happy,
we must make haste and do things that will benefit us.
Of course, as I see it,
what is of the most help to living beings’present and future lives is none other than the sublime Buddhadharma.
There are two key points that are crucial in Buddhadharma.
The first is pure view, especially the right view of belief in cause and effect.
Without it, one will not attain the peace and happiness of the higher realms.
The second is untainted confidence
—that is, unfailing confidence in the Three Jewels.
This is the foundation of all perfect attainment in this life and in future lives.
How important then are confidence in the Three Jewels and the right view of the truth of cause and effect?
The Buddha told us that when we possess these two, we are assured of never falling to the lower realms.
We can also attain all the virtue and merit we seek through these two.
Thus, confidence and right view are our ultimate friends.
Things like wealth, position, and fame cannot be depended upon forever.
None of these can be brought along with us in the bardo.
Our lives are like the stars at dawn, disappearing in the blink of an eye.
As I am an old man, it is easier for me to have this insight.
But those of you who are young should not think that the future is still long.
Do not have this kind of blind self-confidence.
Everyone needs to contemplate what plans he or she has for the future.
